Calusa Coffee Roasters

My local roaster — Calusa Coffee Roasters on E Commercial Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, roasting craft coffee in-house.

My local. Calusa Coffee Roasters sits on East Commercial Boulevard, and it’s exactly the kind of small operation this hobby is supposed to be about. They roast in-house on a red drum roaster — the green coffee is stacked in boxes and burlap sacks a few feet from the machine, so you’re standing in the whole process at once.

The bean list is handwritten on a sheet by the counter: alongside the usual single-origins (Ethiopia Allono, Kenya AA, Guatemala Antigua, Costa Rica, Sumatra) there are house blends with local names — Old Florida, New Pier Blend, Everglades House, Mocha Java — each with a quick tasting note.

I walked out with a bag of their Colombia Huila. Brewing notes on that to come once I’ve run it through the V60.
